Airtime Hits The Social Media Air

Sean Parker, the founder of Napster just came out with a new social network called Airtime. It is like a re-invented version of Chatroulette, except you are connecting to people via your Facebook connections and common interests. I am not sure about how viable this is as a business network yet. From the conversations that I had below you can see why this is still a little too early to be completely effective for business.

However, I did have a blast! I got to wear my Indiana Jones hat with one call and then discussed the Hangover in another call as I was asked whether I had nights like that? Check below to learn more about this and also whether or not this is a good tool for helping you find targeted clients for business.

Airtime Assessment

This is a cool idea if you just want to hang out with some random people for 30 minutes. However, it was  a cool idea when Chatroulette launched 2 years ago as well. My personal thoughts are that this social network will need to have a few million people before it is useful instead of the 13,000 that had set up the Facebook app when I signed up last night plus the thousands who have signed up over the past few hours.

Since everything is based upon common interests, you need to have enough people with common interests. Especially for entrepreneurs we need a lot of entrepreneurs on the site to make it worthwhile. That way, you can just sit on Airtime to prospect for business.

Social Networking Minute: Empire Avenue Missions

For this week’s social networking minute, we are going to focus on Empire Avenue Missions. Empire Avenue is one of those unique social networks that understands the value of connections. In fact, they understand it so well that they created their entire social network to work around the idea of people investing in each other.

empire avenue missionsWhat is also amazing about this social network is that when you invest in people and grow your portfolio you can also use that money (called Eav’s) to pay for missions. Missions are great, because they can help you launch a fan page quicker (think about pressing a button and having 25 fans in order to get your vanity url or having a great post retweeted).

The number of uses for this are limitless. However, before you understand what to use it for, you have to know how to use it. This social networking minute shows you the basics of empire avenue missions in our favorite one minute format.

Now, that you are learning how to use Empire Avenue, what type of Empire Avenue missions would you create?

Pinterest Marketing Tutorial

I want to do a Pinterest marketing tutorial, since this site is becoming hot for small businesses. This pin board site has gone from virtual obscurity to darling status in the past six months. I think it is time to discuss how to use the site with the Pinterest Marketing Tutorial video that you will see below.

Pinterest Marketing Tutorial

Pinterest Marketing Tutorial Lowdown

The cool thing about this social network is that it is so new for most users that we are going into this network with the same level of knowledge. That means with a fresh social network you can easily build your connections and not have to worry about coming into a fully developed network where the connections have already found people they want to network with thus avoiding your products. This is a network you can grow with to build profitable relationships.

Now that you have had a chance to review the Pinterest marketing tutorial, how are you planning on using this for your business?

StumbleUpon Traffic Magic

There is no doubt in mind that there is StumbleUpon traffic magic in the world. How do I know such a thing? I have had a lot of success with Stumbleupon traffic lately. This site is quickly becoming one of my favorite sites for driving quality traffic to my blog.

While I am still in the learning phase of my experiments with StumbleUpon (Translate: Expect More In-Depth posts later on), this site with minimal effort has become a goldmine for driving traffic. Plus, it should be even easier with the new StumbleUpon design.

Stumbleupon Traffic Magic

Over a two week period I had over 2,000 visits to my blog from StumbleUpon alone. For me this represents about 15% of my traffic over that period of time. Additionally, the people who are on StumbleUpon generally promote my site more, sign up in higher percentages, and have a much lower bounce rate.

Plus, and this is a big plus for me are more local to the United States. I am all for international traffic, but I am also understand the beauty of home court advantage. StumbleUpon has been the great equalizer in my traffic, because the vast majority of my clients are here in the US. Which to me is a very big reason in me increasing the US traffic.

StumbleUpon Traffic Magic Tricks And Tips

So, now the big question that everyone has been dying to learn more about from the start of this article. How in the world do I do it?

1. Remember how important I told you tribes have been in my blogging? These are the people who are most likely to Stumble and Share my posts. Without them, I would not have nearly the amount of traffic as previously mentioned. If you are looking to learn more about TSA or Triberr, please let me know in the comments. I will email you the appropriate links to get started. They are very different groups and I want to help you get started with the one that fits your needs appropriately.

2. Everyday I like about 5-10 posts from other people (80% of them in my tribes) and then I share with my followers 2-3 articles that I think are just awesome (Note: Most of these shares are with people who are in my tribes or new followers).

3. I am looking to connect with 1-2 new people everyday from my connections or people that I know elsewhere.

That is it! The great StumbleUpon traffic magic is out. If you notice it is very much like other social networks that I belong to in terms of strategy. Connect with a few people everyday, share their info, and then have a core group of people to help share yours. Except that StumbleUpon traffic comes in a lot faster than Facebook or Twitter (Working to change that with the Social Traffic Plugin).

StumbleUpon Traffic Magical Next Steps

So, what is next?

1. Either sign up for Stumbleupon or just sign in and make sure that your profile is updated.

2. When you are finished with that feel free to connect with me. http://www.stumbleupon.com/stumbler/smartatthestart

Other than that, I look forward to your Stumbles as we look to build our StumbleUpon traffic together.

Craigslist Secret Code

For those of you who have been hiding from online marketing I have some great news: we have finally uncovered the long-lost Craigslist secret code. Craigslist is great for any business that is looking to drive traffic, sell a product, or pitch a webinar. Now with the information below you will know how to use Craigslist to increase your business so you to can have the Craigslist Secret Code that has been missing throughout the ages.

Craigslist Secret Code

Craigslist Secret Code Decoded!

There are a number of different ways to market your business through Craigslist. The first and probably easiest way to do so is to Craigslist Secret Code Gigsgo through the different gigs on Craigslist on the bottom right hand corner of the home page and then click on the appropriate Gig. For myself personally, I am generally looking at Computer and Writing gigs, because that is how I help other businesses.

However, there are other categories available, such as crew, event, domestic, labor, and other gigs. Generally these are shorter period gigs, which is why they are perfect for a business owner, such as myself who is always looking for new clients. It is unbelievable how many quality prospects you can find using Craigslist gigs.

Once you have found the right type of gigs for your business start perusing the list and find 2-3 that you can submit some sort of offer or proposal immediately. Chances are that you will be rejected by 80-90% of anyone you talk with on Craigslist. However, there is a small percentage(Around 10-20%) of clients who will use your services. Keep with Craigslist and you will be able to continually ply your craft for new-found businesses.

Craigslist Secret Code Ads

In addition to that, I would also recommend that you post your own gigs or services in the service area. There are different categories for different specialties. This method is real easy once you have a gig listed, since you can just renew it every 48 hours as long as the offer you made is still up to date.

All you have to do is click the renew button, which might take a whole 30 seconds. Just make sure that you do not overdo your usage. If you need any help with setting up your Craigslist ads here are some free buttons along with instructions for you to use to get started.

Spend about 20-30 minutes writing a compelling ad and do not forget to have a call to action in your ad. Nothing more annoying than finding something interesting on Craigslist and nothing to do with your newfangled information.

One thing that I do on a lot of my ads is disable the email button at the top of the editor, which spammers use to contact you and instead put a website address or my phone number.  This will dramatically reduce the number of spammers and bring in high quality convertible traffic. Quick note: when I was in real estate, this was the number one way that we found buyers and renters.Actually, there were times when we used Craigslist and received close to 30 or more calls in one day just for a property or rental.

Craigslist Secret Code Forums

The last part of the Craigslist secret code I have to admit is the place where I have seen the least results. However, what I have noticed that this area is good for is a little bit of a traffic jump. Because it is a forum broken down by categories the people who do go onto your blog or website will then be more targeted. I have noticed that people who found my blog from these forums are shocked that it was not a scam. That leads me to send them to some information.

Or you can test these posts leading to your squeeze pages as well, to see what happens. That is what I am in the process of testing right now.

Finally, one benefit of the forums that you will not have in the regular posts is that if you do not put a city in your posts it will be a general post that can go to all locales. Just a little bit of enticement for the Craigslist Secret Code.

If you thought the Craigslist Secret Code was interesting and need some help getting started, please let me know in the comments below so we can get you started today.

Yelp Reviews-Quality, Not Quantity

I was talking with a client lately about Yelp reviews. We were discussing why one of the reviews that did not pass muster with Yelp. It made me think about how many other small business owners were maybe not using Yelp properly. So, in this post I want to discuss a few tips. First, however, take a look at a short video done by Yelp that explains in their own words how they deem reviews to be quality.

Yelp Reviews

Yelp Reviews Explained

So, what exactly are good reviews on Yelp? Well that is something only the Yelp team can full explain (which they will not). Here is my interpretation of an interpretation of a wild guess that is based on educated facts and experience. Huh? What does that mean? What I tell you is valid, and may change at any time. (Ma always said I should have become a lawyer!)

1. Yelp reviewers must have an account. Yelp actually positions themselves as a valid site, because anyone who reviews the site must have a name and therefore be a real person. Yelp is constantly fighting to remove fraudulent accounts.

2.Are you established on Yelp. While that definition is part of the ethereal mysteries of the universe, what it means is that you are sufficiently qualified to list reviews on Yelp. This also means that someone who gets a review from an established Yelper means more than from a newbie on the site with no reviews. Think of this similar to Google saying backlinks from PR 10 sites are worth more than PR 2 sites. There is a value in everybody’s review.

3. Yelp discourages business owners from actually asking for reviews. Part of the way that Yelp looks to encourage honest reviews is to remove the business owner. The old, “hey, can you give me a positive review on Yelp” discussion is waylaid. This stops the fake 25 reviews from clients coming in saying that Bobo’s Bottleneck Plant was awesome campaign is no longer in effect.

With Bobo’s campaign gone then how do you actually get reviews. Well, one technique is to just keep talking about Yelp the entire time. While you are not supposed to ask about reviews on Yelp, there is nothing wrong with subliminal messages about the greatness of Yelp in your business and for other businesses around you. This goes double if the client found you off Yelp.

Finally, provide quality service and have your Yelp profile on your business card, so when you ask people if they could refer you they also see your Yelp profile page as well.

In the end, Yelp reviews are a bit of an art to get correctly. Use this art long enough and you will profit from this art tremendously.

Foursquare Hits 1 Billion Check-Ins

This might be a little bit of old news, but I thought this video by Foursquare talking about their 1 Billion check-ins on the site was kind of cool! So, I made an executive blogging decision that I would share their video on this blog. The Foursquare video below is just cool and I needed to share it. Deal with it!

A Week of Check-ins on the Path to One Billion from foursquare on Vimeo.

It is amazing how many check-ins happen in a week on Foursquare these days. When I first started looking at Foursquare about 18 months ago there were about 4 million people on the site and very little activity in the Chicagoland area. That is probably why I never truly got as into Foursquare as other social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Youtube.

But with the rise of mobile marketing, Foursquare is going to take a front seat in how we do social along with Facebook Places. It will be interesting to see how everything turns out in the next few years for Foursquare.

Cat Tap Dancing

Did you say Cat Tap Dancing?

I thought a little break from the normal was needed today. That is why I posted this blog this way!
